The Funeral of Pinchas Segelov After the Shabbos Protests, 1956
In Jerusalem, mourners fill a street and march behind the body of Pinchas Segelov.

His name is Pinchas Segelov (פנחס סגלוב). He was 55, of Neturei Karta.
On Shabbos, 1 September 1956 / 25 Elul 5716, about 150 men in talleisim stood in the street on the western edge of the city. They were protesting cars and trucks on Shabbos. The crowd grew to about 5,000. Police came with clubs and water hoses. When the street was cleared, they carried Pinchas Segelov to the hospital. He died that night. One man was killed. At least twenty were hurt.
Sunday, 2 September / 26 Elul, about 20,000 people attended. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency daily bulletin reported the funeral the next day.
The film and what followed
On 12 September, more than 2,000 Orthodox Jews stood in Union Square in New York. Four hundred rabbanim sat inside the police barriers. The Satmar Rebbe, Reb Yoel Teitelbaum, was there. Rabbi Aharon Kotler of Lakewood was among the speakers. They had come over chillul Shabbos in Eretz Yisrael. The Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported the rally the next day.
